During the American Revolution, the Campbell family watched friends and neighbors move across the Straits of Mackinac to a new island home on Mackinac Island, while they stayed behind to await word of the need for a lumber mill. March 14-15 ASK Author: Scrambled States with author/illustrator Laurie Keller
"One day, Kansas wakes up grumpy. The other 49 states are stretching, yawning, and pouring maple syrup onto each other's pancakes, but irritable Kansas announces to his kindly neighbor Nebraska that life is dull and changes must be made. Books that claim to "make geography fun" usually have to be taken with a dose of skepticism: so often, the teaching is there and the entertainment isn't. This delightfully quirky and original book shows how it should be done." --Richard Farr

March 14-15 ASK Author: A Summer of Silk Moths with Margaret Willey NEW!
Award-winning author Margaret Willey has written a novel that begins with a high school lepidopterist named Paul McMichaels who keeps a journal about moth discovery, collection and display. Nearly twenty years later, Nora McMichaels—a runaway who never met her father, comes to a Michigan nature center called Riverside, where Paul’s memory still lives. Recently, A SUMMER OF SILK MOTHS was chosen for an Honor Award by the Green Earth Book Awards, an award that is given annually to books which inspire children and young adults to “grow a deeper appreciation, respect, and responsibility for their natural environment.” Willey discusses the necessary preparation and research she undertook to create characters that are connected by their shared interest in the sciences. She will also touch on her use of a real Michigan nature center, Fernwood Botanical Gardens in Buchanan, Michigan, as a prototype for the setting of her novel. It is not necessary for students to have read A SUMMER OF SILK MOTHS. Willey will provide a synopsis, as well as relevant visual material. Students will be invited to ask questions about the writing life, as well as the author’s own interest in Lepidoptera and the natural sciences.

March 24-25 ASK Author: The 3 Bears and Goldilocks with Margaret Willey
We all know that Goldilocks has a lot to say about the Three Bears. Everything they have is either too hot or too cold or too big or too lumpy or too hard or too soft or too completely, absolutely wrong. Only one of them can get anything right! Just right, that is.
But have you ever wondered, even for the littlest mini-second, what the Three Bears think about her? Well, it turns out those bears have a thing or two, or three, to say... Margaret Willey turns this favorite classic upside down...because there's always another side to the story....

April 19 ASK Author: Old Cricket with Lisa Wheeler
Old Cricket didn't get to be a ripe old age "by being a dumb bug." No, sir. When his wife asks him to ready their roof for the winter, he fakes a knee injury to weasel out of it. When she sends him off to Doc Hopper, he hobbles out of the house "with a creak-creak-creak in case his missus was watching." On his way, he meets up with his cousin Katydid, who needs help with some berry-picking. He fakes yet another ailment--a crick in his neck--and wobbles off "with a creak-creak-creak, and a crick-crick-crick, in case Katydid was watching." All (meaning Old Cricket's nap) would have gone according to plan, surely, if the bug didn't encounter Old Crow, a bird who didn't get to be a ripe old age "by being a birdbrain." Old Crow wants to eat Old Cricket, and by the time our leggy anti-hero escapes the crow's clutches, the conniving cricket has developed some very real ailments. The team behind the wonderful Sailor Moo: Cow at Sea succeeds again in creating a delightfully clever read-aloud with plenty of rhythm, repetition, and winning wordplay. Ponder Goembel's skillful, larger-than-life illustrations (my, what hairy legs the crickets have!) suit the good-natured fable to a T. (Ages 4 to 8) --Karin Snelso
